I used Castrol Synthetic, which met all the requirements listed in my owner's manual. I read the labels on EVERY brand we sell at Wal~Mart and what I bought was the ONLY one that met what the machine required.

With using the $6 filter from Honda, and 3 quarts, mine holds 2+(but less than 3), it ended up costing me $24 to do it myself. The Honda oil (non-synthetic) was the same price that I paid for the full-synthetic so I think I did the best thing for my engine.

BE I use Castrol 20-50 myself. The synthetic don't work good on wet clutches. So I use the conventional oil. But Castrol guards against thermal breakdown and I change ours every 25 to 30 running hours. Yoshi's quad is gettting its first motor breakdown since it was bought in 02. Cam chain getting some slack in it at idle so I'm replacing it and while I'm there putting a cam from WebCams in it to give it a little get up and go. Smile To me its done its job as a motor oil.

I have been told by several mechanics not to use synthetic and if you do wait until you have at least 300 miles on it so the rings will seat good.

The folks I spoke with said the break-in oil is for that and it had to be changed at 100 miles.

I have looked at the test results that Lucas oil did,the YamahaLube scored near the bottom in every test, and was told that it is a very cheap oil made by Citgo.

JASO MA specifications are what a lot of the newer machines are now calling for , this valvoline was the only one I saw at the zone that had it a year ago , used it in the rancher and KQ with no issues , I've also heard that syn was not good for the clutches ? ?

I'll keep using the yamaha lube until my warranty is over . I change mine every 200 - 300 miles anyway , so any brand should be ok , I'd worry more if you were going 700 - 1000 miles inbetween changes Shocked

I may run it in my KQ if yuo had good luck with it. I always ran it in the Grizzly 660.

a guy that lives down the road that just graduated from MMI down in orlando said that regular castrol like 10w-40 is not good for atv cause the gears are so close together that it "chews" up the oil since it's not designed for wet clutches. i'll just stick with the yamalube for mine.

We run Castrol 20-50w in ours and my wife's 02 250ex has over 6000 miles on it and it don't us oil or smoke. Its got a WebCam in it and we run 110 octane in them and it has worked well for us. Now I change ours every 25 to 30 runnning hours cause they are air-cooled and it only holds 1.5 quarts.

correct... regular motor oil (not designed for atvs) will foam up and not protect efficiently.
